World Cup History
The First World Cup
The inaugural FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay in 1930. Only 13 teams participated, with Uruguay defeating Argentina 4-2 in the final to become the first World Cup champions.
The tournament was created by FIFA president Jules Rimet to establish a global football championship. All matches were played in Montevideo, and the European teams faced a long sea journey to participate.
The Jules Rimet Trophy
The original World Cup trophy was named after FIFA president Jules Rimet. Brazil won it permanently in 1970 after their third World Cup victory.
The current trophy, introduced in 1974, is made of 18-carat gold and weighs 6.1 kg. It depicts two human figures holding up the Earth. The base can be engraved with the names of winning nations up to 2038.
